Dishcloths

I made dish cloths as stocking stuffers this year. Two of the designs I made up. I didn’t write them down, and I even forgot to take pictures, but here’s a description if you’d like to try them.

Mitre square: This square has a double row of increases on the diagonal, and the garter stitch ridges run horizontal on one side of the diagonal and vertical on the other.

Cast on five stitches.
Knit one or two rows.
Pattern row: Knit two, increase, knit one, increase, knit two.
Repeat pattern row until square is desired size.
Bind off and weave in ends.

I used “make one” increases, except I worked into the front of the stitch to leave a small hole for a lacy effect. I didn’t do yarnovers because they make a bigger hole.

Patchwork square: This cloth is four squares joined mostly by picking up stitches.

Cast on 16 stitches, onto waste yarn.

Knit in garter stitch until you have a square. Keep track of the number of rows.

Turn the square sideways and pick up sixteen stitches along the side. Knit another square with the same number of rows.

Make the third square the same way.

The fourth square is a bit more complicated. Start the same way, by picking up stitches along the side of the third square. Before you start knitting, you need to do some figuring. How many rows do you have in each square? Chances are, it’s more than sixteen. Figure out how to distribute the sixteen stitches you cast on along the rows of your fourth square. Write down the sixteen rows you want to join with the sixteen stitches. On each of these rows, combine the cast on stitch with the row’s edge stitch — I did knit two together. When the square is complete, bind off and weave in ends.
