What does your vet do at your pet’s annual check-up?

In NY, we got a complete physical plus shots and a stool sample analysis (in case of parasites).

At the clinic I took the kitty to today, we just got shots. They did very kindly clean up the kitty and the carrier since she’d thrown up on the way there. And they were very nice. But no physical exam. Just seems odd to me. I think next year we’ll go somewhere else.

  1. at an annual check up you do a work up…at least a bit more than shots. even if you go to FACE spay and neuter for shots they check the cat or dogs heart. Goodness.

  2. When I had my pet…they’d do shots, look the dog over very well, and check for heartworm. Thats it. They didn’t do a physical on the kittly? Just shots? Thats odd.

  3. Hi Marcy! It’s Sheila from ED. I’m a vet tech, and your cat should always have a physical before shots! We wouldn’t do it any other way. We occasionally have a cat come in that is very hard to handle, so we sometimes will sedate them, or even knock them out completely. But usually we can handle them. We will check a stool if the owner brings one in - the doctor doesn’t like to retrieve one unless really necessary because it is very uncomfortable for the cat. We are also checking cats for heartworm as well, not just dogs. It is pretty prevalent in the Midwest now in cats. I would certainly find a different vet.

  4. Thanks all — I will go to one of the other two vets next year.
