Forward

Amy crawled forward a few inches last night, three different times.

Most of the time she gets around by leaning over onto her hands, then pushing back into a sitting position. Sometimes she crawls / creeps backwards. Sometimes she rolls over.

The outlet plugs are installed.

The kitty dishes are now in the basement.

Next? How to keep her out of the TV stand which stores our videos and the VCR and the DVD player. I could move the videos. But the VCR and DVD player sort of need to stay put. I don’t want to be forever moving her away or saying no. I’m thinking about cutting up a big box to sit around the TV stand… not foolproof but a first layer of defense.

In other news, the dryer still overheats — not the whole thing, but the back of it still gets very hot. The noises have changed — for several minutes it just squeaks, but then that rusty, difficult sound starts. The manual said something about replacing the vent hose, so we’ve done that. I’ll try some laundry today and see what happens. If it still overheats, the next thing to find out is whether it would cost almost as much to have a repairman out as it would to just buy a new dryer.

Oh, and while it’s nice to have a clothesline in the basement, it’s nowhere near as nice as having one outdoors. But there are no trees to tie a line to. I hate the thought of having to sink a pole somewhere. Mark said when he was little they had a hole in the ground and put the pole up when they needed it. That might work.

  1. Glad progress is being made on settling in.

As for the outside clothes line, one form of clothesline is the umbrella type which I’ve seen that fits in a stand much like an umbrella stand with a patio table set, and can be taken in when not in use. It folds up, too. We’ve considered that type, and still are.

  2. I’d rather have one long line, where the sun and breeze can get equally to all the items. I can see that umbrella type being good for a smaller yard, though.

  3. It might be the belt. There isn’t much to break on a dryer. We had the most irritating squeaky noise-I had to buy a new one, which was actually better for the electric bill anyway.

  4. I remember that clothesline. I think we may have bought that from Montgomery Wards. If I were to buy another one some day, which I am certain I will, I would want the same kind. Dryers are so hard on clothes. I am not sure, but I think our clothesline had more than one line.

  5. One thing we do here in our small yard is to use those wooden drying racks. When it’s sunny, we put them in the yard. When it’s cloudy or rainy, we put them in the extra bathroom, one in the tub and the other on the floor. We got rid of our dryer before we moved - it hadn’t worked in years.

  6. I rarely get this many comments on a post. And can you believe it, none of the comments are about AMY CRAWLING?

  7. Yay Amy is crawling. Wonderful. Now she will be getting into things! About the videos and other things…this is where the word “no” really comes into play, repeatively! And of course a lot of explaining. I’d start now if I were you. I did with Blake and he has learned to stay away from stuff that he knows he shouldnt touch…such as tv, dvd player, cords, etc. If you do decide not to put up defense mechanisms, when you do explain your “no’s” definately distract her afterwards with positive things, such as a toy. Blake does have a few areas though that I allow him to go through, such as cabinets in the kitchen and some drawers elsewhere. He loves to empty them. If you do put the box around the tv stand, just remember, it will eventually have to come down and she will discover in her eyes a whole new world.

  8. The clothesline my darling put in consists of two holes with 4×4’s. LOVE IT! They say a clothesline deteriorates your property value though. PUHLEEZ! LOVE your Amy pics~I just really enjoyed visiting you today! (((((HUGS))))) sandi

  9. The cardboard is up and working like a charm. If the TV stand wasn’t right in her main play area, I probably would go with the repeated “no’s” and distractions, but it’s Right There and it would be “no” more often than anything positive. It’s good to teach “no,” and we will / are, but I also think it’s good to minimize the “no’s” when possible.

4×4’s — good idea. Could also make a little tiny square bed around them with some flowers or something.
