I ran the dryer through a whole load today. The back got hot (too hot to keep your hand on it), it made noise, but nothing blew up or caught fire or anything. I should mention it does have a safety mechanism that will turn off the motor if it dangerously overheats. And there’s a fire extinguisher hanging right on the wall next to it.
We’ve haven’t gone around touching the backs of dryers much, so who knows how hot they’re supposed to get?
My mom touched the back of hers today and it doesn’t get hot.
What about yours?
Ours gets warm, but not that hot where you cannot rest your hand on it. Does it get hot even if you use the air dry option? If so, you probably have some danger amongst your hands. Something like 15,000 fires a year are caused by faulty appliances. Be careful.

it shouldn’t get that hot, period.
Call a repair guy. for 30.00 or so, you’ll know if it’s worth fixing or not.

Beautiful Dreamer (blogger buddy) just had a fire in her basement caused by the dryer. I agree with Thordora, get it checked. She said something like 7 or 9 (???) firemen came in the house to deal with that dryer. Frightening stuff to gather the cats and family and run out of the house. Get it checked, not just for your peace of mind but also for the peace of mind of your friends.

I read about that, Austin. Hers was fifty-five years old, though, and this one is just fourteen years old.
The good news, though, is that we decided to go ahead and just get a new one. It should be delivered tomorrow evening!
Thanks all for your replies.
