Goodbye, Joe

Today was my last therapy appointment, barring anything unforeseen.

1. People like Joe who understand, validate, respect, encourage, reassure, comfort, help…

2. Therapists like Joe who take their work seriously; who really take the time to listen and know their patients as individuals, as persons, not as pigeonhole-able “cases.”

3. Therapists like Joe who understand both what’s true in psychology and what’s true about God, who let spirituality and psychology illuminate one another for themselves and for their patients, and who can help their patients distinguish between spiritual and psychological issues.

4. People like Joe who are safe; who are not shocked, dismayed, threatened, or manipulated; who are big enough and secure enough that I can be me with them, without fear.

5. People who understand and value mental health and therapy; who see through the unnecessary stigma; who care more about a person being healthy and authentically themselves than about appearances and reputations and “rules.”
