23 Weeks Prenatal Visit

We had another prenatal visit today.

I’m still on the low end as far as weight gain goes, but they’re not worried. Everything else — size of the uterus, baby’s heartbeat, etc — is fine. The midwife we saw even reassured me that I can lie on my back if I want — if it obstructs blood flow for me, I’ll feel uncomfortable and move automatically, even in my sleep, and I don’t have any of the issues that would make them worry about it obstructing blood flow for the baby.

I asked about childbirth classes — What to Expect says some classes start about now so I figured it was time to ask. I was hoping to get a handout with a list of all the classes available in the area and which ones, if any, were recommended by this practice. She just said one of their members teaches a class and the hospital offers some, and there are also others in the area. Guess I’ll have to make some phone calls.

Anyway, the midwife gave us two items to take home.

One is a notebook with information about the hospital stay and some basics about newborn care. I was a little surprised to find that phone service costs extra! Humph. There’s other good information in there, though. Sounds like they have a nice maternity program at the hospital — all sorts of options labor and delivery positions, including a Jacuzzi; Mark can stay overnight; one nurse is in charge of both me and the baby…

The other thing the midwife gave us is a gestational diabetes test beverage. Mmmm… nothing like a nice tall glass of cold fruit-punch-flavored sugar syrup to drink within five minutes. I’ll have to do that an hour before our next visit.

By the way, for a few weeks now there’s been lots of movement going on. Still inconsistent, which is not surprising since she’s still quite little, and because even babies have moods.

  1. We had to pay for the phone in “my day” as well. Some things never change.
Now I know where were when I tried to call this afternoon.
Glad to hear all is well, I will talk to you soon.

  2. I don’t personally like the What to Expect book~it’s fear-producing I feel. Have you read the Sears pregnancy book? Spiritual Midwifery? Ina Mae’s Guide to Childbirth? Just a few other suggestions… I LOVE hearing all about how you’re doing!!!! (((((HUGS))))) sandi

P.S. I got your box and *hope* to send ya a note! *THANK YOU!* (((((HUGS))))) sandi

  3. Huh — I so far think the What to Expect book does a good job of mentioning all the possibilities without provoking fear. I’ll look for the others you mentioned at our library — funny, around here, a book titled Spiritual Midwifery would make me think pagan / New Agey.

Oh, and Mom — someone I was talking to yesterday said the hospital notebook is a bit outdated, and they didn’t remember being charged for the phone service. I’m sure even if they do it’s some little fee.
